Putting On a New Face

North Kona Coast, Hawaiʻi, HI

Our clients wanted to experience a sense of relaxation from the moment they entered their property, signaling a departure from their hectic life on the U.S. mainland.  Given the history of working ranches in the area, and a desire to create a more casual atmosphere, we created a “camp-like” experience by siting multiple buildings scattered across the property. The buildings offer common areas for gatherings of family and friends, as well as more private spaces to enjoy solitude and quiet.  Each building maintains an intimate scale and the architecture remains understated, leaving the client to focus on the lush tropical landscape and expansive ocean views.

Putting On A New Face Living Room- Luxury Residential by Philpotts Interiors

Living Room

The main living house, or hale, and separate master bedroom hale are reminiscent of Hawaiian Territorial buildings, influenced by the architecture of Mediterranean cultures and adapted to an organic style suited to Hawaii’s climate and culture. The buildings have thick stone coral walls to minimize the heat, large door and window openings and lanais to capture cooling tradewinds. Intricate wood detailing throughout reveals the hand of local artisans.

The guest bedroom and recreation hale, known as the “cowboy house,” are influenced by relaxed Hawaiian plantation architecture, expressed with simple agrarian form, wood siding and a deep, generous porch.

The landscaping of informal gardens and orchards looks as if planted over time. The camp is intended to be a casual retreat, where our clients can easily unwind and enjoy the balmy Hawaiian atmosphere.
